It is known among adherents and practitioners of the religion of Islam that clinking two glasses (or two bottles of wine) together is forbidden even if those glasses contain water. Is it true? What are the reasons behind this prohibition? If striking a glass or glasses with another is forbidden, does it mean that water inside those cups also becomes haram to drink?

In the Name of God, the Most High

If clinking a glass on another is considered to be “promotion of drinking wine” or it reduces its meanness in the eyes of people or entails other evils, it is forbidden. However, since this is a practice of wine drinkers, the obligatory precaution is not to strike a glass with another even if none of the secondary statuses applies to it.
